What is consultation from a Bowen family systems theory perspective?
When individuals, couples and families experience challenges in their physical, emotional, or social functioning, it is an opportunity to learn new patterns to live more optimally.

Bowen theory describes the predictable patterns of relationships established in the family. By
looking at individual and family pattern of functioning over time, people can be more thoughtful during times of duress. To develop the ability to take responsibility for the part one is playing in interactions is central to a decrease in symptoms.

Consultation involves:

• developing a broader way of thinking of a problem,
• increasing awareness of relationship patterns,
• increasing self-regulation, and
• developing thoughtful principles to guide behavior in important relationships.
